As colder weather sets in, sprayers require special care and maintenance. Proper winterization does not only protect your machines from frost-related damages — preserving efficiency and extending service life — but it also ensures your equipment will be ready for a smooth restart at next spring time.
We, as IDEAL company, recommend these following 5 key steps for effective winterization, helping you minimize risks and extend the lifespan of your machines.
1. Emptying and thoroughly cleaning the tank
Start by completely emptying your sprayer’s tank. Even the smallest amount of chemical residue can freeze, causing cracks or parts deformations.
Once the tank is empty, it’s essential to flush the system with clean water to remove any chemical traces. Don’t forget to rinse all pipes and filters thoroughly to make sure no residue remains.
2. External washing of the machine
After cleaning the tank, wash the outside of the machine, removing dirt, dust, and chemical deposits from all surfaces. Use suitable brushes and mild detergents.
Blowing compressed air over hard-to-reach areas helps prevent rust and protects components from moisture.
3. Inspection and replacement of worn parts
Before storage, carefully inspect the machine in detail.
Check for signs of wear and verify condition of all components, paying special attention to filters, pumps, and nozzles, as these are the parts most prone to damage.
If you find any defective parts, replace or repair them immediately. Solving little issues now can prevent problems and costly breakdowns when you restart the equipment.
4. Protecting the system with antifreeze solution
Once all checks are completed, prepare the machine for winter by filling the circuit with a water–antifreeze solution.
The process is simple: put in the tank some antifreeze solution, start the machine, and let it circulate through the entire system, making sure it reaches every part—including the spray nozzles.
This step is crucial to prevent frost damage to pipes and other internal components.
5. Safe storage and preparation for spring restart
After completing all maintenance steps, store the sprayer in a dry, sheltered location. Indoor storage protects it from bad weather, reducing the risk of corrosion and mechanical damage.
Before starting up again in spring, carry out a quick system check and, if necessary, flush it with water to remove any antifreeze residues.
Following these winterization steps is essential to ensure your sprayers are ready to go when the new season begins.
